Capturing the feeling of wonder and awe that the night sky can inspire, Lucent Matter follows the life cycle of a star. From clouds of gas and dust a star is born, becomes a red giant and ends its life in a supernova explosion into a black hole. Liquids, gases and matter flow together to form a celestial composition. Through material investigation into form and matter, patterns emerge that connect the macroscopic to the cosmic scale. Lucent Matter’s projection into a 3 dimensional dome space pays homage to its original format as a planetarium film. As a historical site of astronomical and artistic endeavour, planetariums have long connected humans with the wonders of the cosmos. Lucent Matter challenges these classic digital visualisations of space imagery through its sensitive and material-based approach, using animated footage of ink, water and material experimentations to visualise the intangible and unreachable nature of the universe.
